Theme Parks every year have different celebrations throughout the year from Halloween to specific Food and Wine festivals. Universal Studios is one of the parks around the world that goes all out for their Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations. Every year for the month of February (Usually the 5th to the 18th) Universal hosts their Lunar New Year event by decorating the entire park. If you are looking to plan a trip around this time of the year, here are a few things you can expect.
Universal owns the rights to Dreamworks characters and among them is the popular film Kung Fu Panda. Po along with his cast of fierce warriors come out for photoshoots with guests. If you are familiar with the films then you’ll be happy to see that Po’s father Mr. Ping has set up shop home to his famous foods such as noodles, ramen, fortune cookies, dumplings and more. You can meet with him in his kitchen and take a photo as well.
The entire park is transformed with cherry blossom trees, painted red and gold and given a Chinese authentic feel to it. The characters from other films such as Despicable Me and Shrek are also draped in Chinese style garb. There are games, prizes and activities you can participate in as well such as writing a wish down on a note type pad and hanging it in a tree for good fortune. There are also live performances that occur each hour where the dragon warriors from Kung Fu Panda teach you some martial arts. Classic Chinese dragons roam the pathways as a celebration which ad that extra China style vibe you are looking to enjoy.
Every Year it’s changed ever so slightly depending on which animal is representing that year from the ancient Chinese zodiac. Snake, Ox, Rat, Dragon are a few of the different animals representing the chart. If you are looking to visit the park during a time throughout the year that isn’t Halloween or Christmas, this is the time to go as the ticket isn’t more expensive than a regular off season day. I had a blast last time I went and I can’t wait to go back and visit again!
