Godzilla ride at Universal Studios

Universal Studios has been the leading competitor to Disney in terms of theme parks and attractions. Universal has a wide range of their own films and media to take inspiration from when creating their rides such as Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and even beloved characters from their Dreamworks Animation studio such as Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train your Dragon. They have a separate animation studio called Illumination Animation which features characters from films like The Minions, Pets and Sing.

This doesn’t seem to be enough as Universal has also made contracts with outside properties such as Hannah Barbara to feature the Scooby Doo franchise and theme park licensing rights for the Dr.Seuss creations such as Cat in The Hat and of course The Grinch. If you think this isn’t enough, they just opened a contract with Nintendo to create Nintendo World which you can read all about right HERE.

A separate deal they’ve made which has been a big hit was with Warner Bros. characters. Most WB characters like the Justice League and Looney Tunes are over at Six Flags which you can also read about HERE. The WB deal allowed Universal to create the highly successful Harry Potter area which has done wonders for the park since it’s initial creation.

Warner Bros has recently had a string of success with the MonsterVerse films featuring characters from the Toho line up of Godzilla films. Godzilla vs Kong (2021) may be the final installment in the series expanding over 8 years, 4 films and a number of side comics. This property of a shared universe created with the help from Legendary Pictures has done what only few others studios have managed to do and created a functional and profitable Universe.

With this comes the big question as to whether or not we’ll see Godzilla join the Universal line up for rides and attractions. Kong has been a character that has stood the test of time at the parks which have featured him on every iteration of the famous studio tour ride and has had many updates from a fully animatronic Kong to a new 360 3D Kong experience based on the 2005 Peter Jackson film King Kong. Universal Studios Orlando Islands of Adventure has redecorated and created a new land called Skull Island (Kong’s island home).

Skull Island Reign of Kong

The 3 most profitable locations for Universal are it’s Hollywood location, Orlando location and Japan location. Japan is the home of Toho whom created Godzilla and it’s many kaiju characters. Currently Warner Bros has licensing rights with both Universal and Toho to create the Monsterverse. Universal is currently in development to not only create Nintendo World in Hollywood and Florida but also expand and create a new park which they are keeping hush hush.

Godzilla is a huge money maker since his debut back in 1954 and has many fans all over the globe. With the profit that the Monsterverse is bringing it would make sense for a Godzilla attraction or area in one of their larger parks. Seeing attractions built around Godzilla, MechaGodzilla, Mothra and King Gidorah would be a dream come true for myself.
